Each season, teams go on a journey towards their peak. Athletes of all ages, backgrounds, and motivations share a dressing room and a common goal. History tells us, the teams that prevail are the ones that can marry the parts into one cohesive, aligned whole. Due to the complex and ever-changing nature of teams, this can be a challenge.
Traditionally, connection is built through shared experiences over time, like the elation of winning, the heartbreak of losing together, high stakes moments, digging deep, or sometimes at 2 am at the pub. Real connection can take months if not years. For this reason, many leave this element to chance.
Each year, managers look to eke out the 1%s to achieve elite performance. Players fine-tune their mental, physical, tactical and nutritional health, all of which are crucial.
However, a key performance enhancer is something fundamentally human. Behind the jersey, athletes are people first. Within the sports setup, they have core human needs to belong, to feel safe, and be connected to a tribe. When these needs are satisfied, athletes can shift focus from 'playing for themselves', to something more meaningful, cooperation, fighting for teammates, and the legacy of the club. The elite teams take no chances with this element. Instead, they can carve out space in the season, dedicated purely to building their collective muscle in the emotional gym.
The Voyage program is a series of workshops that gives teams a unique edge. Ronan works with teams at specific stages throughout the season, building the 'team muscle' in the right areas, at the right time. On a collective level, a visceral level of cohesion, engagement and deeper meaning are established. Individually, players go on a journey of self-development, building awareness and a sense of personal wellbeing along the way. An All Blacks mantra - 'Better people make better players'. See below for the spectrum of outcomes.
Yes. Ideally, I would run at least one session with the full backroom team. This would help 1) connect the group themselves, and 2) learn some key pointers on how to foster connection within their daily roles.
Ideally, 5/6 workshops would be delivered over the course of the season. Each session would be tailored to match where the team is at and what is needed at that point in the season.
Yes, I do work 1-1 with players. These spaces act as a safe, confidential container for players to process and shed any excess weight from personal / sports lives, so that they perform to their potential on the field.
